The Bonsai and The Oak

02/11/08

I am on my familiar path my staff slung over my back, walking along until I reach the small clearing where my waterfall and entry pool await. Jumping in the water felt cool and welcome. Taking a breath I flip over swimming down, down, down, head first through the narrow opening and on into the pool on the other side.

Pulling myself out on the other side I walk out of the cavern and over to Wascar. We exchange our customary greetings and I give him some flat bread that’s wrapped in a red cloth. He tells me that there are once again four chambers for me to visit. The first chamber contains the story of what we believed. As I enter this chamber It’s dark and raining very hard, the wind is howling and the only thing in sight is a very young boy sitting all alone, drenched on a tree stump, with lightning striking all around and thunder roaring. I believed I was all alone and that in the end I would be left all alone…

In the second chamber, there is a table with a bonsai tree sitting on it, the tree is sick and extremely root bound, I remove the tree from its container and examine the mess of tangled and dying roots. While I’m looking at the root ball, Jaguar approaches and immediately I am inside the root ball trapped with no way out. Now Jaguar says that I must dissolve the mess. I freeze, hesitating; finally Jaguar says, “blow”. As soon as I blow the root ball disappears bursting into a ball of brilliant white light that should have hurt my eyes, but didn’t. This room represented getting rid of what I believed.

In the third chamber, the bonsai was there; I picked it up and planted the trunk in the ground. Immediately it turned into a majestic oak. The oak was now growing in the same location where the stump was earlier. Now this scene was beautiful, birds, flowers, warmth and an overwhelming sense of love.

In the last chamber, I had the bonsai in my hands and walked over to a fire place and tossed it in, as it caught fire it sparked, crackled and popped new life into the room and as the sparks died down a sepia toned portrait appeared. The people in the picture were mylong awaited angel, my children, their families and me. The sense of contentment and love was something that caught me off guard and choked me up. I did not expect this…
